Australians! Embrace the front porch.....

The Australian culture has a way to go before it truly embraces the front porch. Whilst many of our overseas cousins go to great length to create an entirely usable room out of the porch, many an Australian porch is left bare with nothing but the odd pot plant for company.

The Aussie front garden can often have a value in the 100’s of thousands of dollars. Yet they sit barren and underutilised. This has always frustrated me to no end.

A good way to get greater use of your front garden and porch (which you pay very good money for the privilege of having) is to create a viewing area (if you have a view) even if you don’t just watching the activity in your local street can be entertainment.
Make a place to sit, have a cuppa, read a mag, or watch the kids play. If the area is a little too exposed simply add a few bushy pot plants and strategically place them to create a more intimate place to sit.

The best money I ever spent was adding a picket fence up the drive. I also completely enclosed the front garden in a low picket fence (still waiting to be painted I might add). This creates a safe place for the little ones to play with no chance of chasing balls into the street or driveway.

It’s also a way to create a space to capture the sun or shade at a different time of day to your backyard.  It’s a great way to create a community feel.

Neighbours walking the dog will stop for a chat and even ask you in for a coffee if you’re lucky...which I am. Don’t underestimate the importance of creating a sense of community; this adds an element of safety that no alarm system can ever provide.

Even your pets will appreciate your porch setting!!

Whimsical decor ideas from the Mornington Peninsular

There are plenty of ways to bring a beach holiday feel to your home.

I found some trational beachy decorative objects and some more whimsical pieces during my stay in Victorias beautiful Mornington Peninsular. These origami cranes made out of sheet music have an amazing mystical feel.

Here is an example of how you can group like items together. This shop display uses items such as stones, glass, candles, shells, jars or vases. The neutral tones can stop it from looking 'too much'.  While these items were quite pricey, I found some really good alternatives bags of beautiful stones in $2 shops, jars of shells in Go Lo and the Reject shop often have a lovely range of vases and glass.
Unfinished wood and bits of robe added to items can add a beachy look. You can pick up some rough twine at hardware stores or even Discount stores wrap them around jars or baskets.

I found a huge range of throw cushions in the Blairgowrie News Agency.
They have a great range of accessories and homewares. I always find a few nice pieces to bring home with me.
These are a great idea!!

If you like the maritime look......... i found these beautiful accessories. You cant go past Salt Water in Sorrento.

Jars, glassware, candles and lamps.....
These are a great way to introduce a beachy look. These simple accessories can be made or bought inexpensively.

My candle holder made out of a coffee jar was inspired by the glassware

And for the kitchen....

These were only $20 in Sorrento.

On my kitchen table
Alfresco living ideas....
These deck chairs have a soft feminine feel by using pastels and prints that are not usually associated with deck chairs.
Distressed wood and layers of weathered paint  invokes a feeling of weathered old boats. Using this wood anywhere can help create a beach feel.
Something as simple as nautical stripes can add a beachy feel to a very simple outdoor setting.
Use crates or old grape baskets or troughs for your plants herbs and veggies.
There are lots of options when it comes to wicker furniture. All of these are classic styles but there are so many options you can select a style thats unique and reflects your taste.

Accessories for your alfresco area can be traditional or you can pick more intricate oriental ornaments that still have a beach feel.
These are some of the stores in Rye, Blairgowrie and Sorrento where I found the above inspirations.
